Bill and June moved to Ancaster in the early ’50s and lived there until 2019. During that time Bill worked in the men’s wear business and in those days he would travel around Ontario to visit his clients that were small, family run, brick and mortar businesses. Most no longer exist but for many years when John or Nancy would have occasion to visit one of “his stores” he was fondly remembered. Bill was easy going and personable, with a great sense of humour. He was a true gentleman and gentle man.
In 1952 Bill became a member of the Hamilton Golf & Country Club which introduced he and June to many lifelong friendships spanning over 70 years. Bill was an avid and accomplished golfer. He was very active at The Club, having served as Men’s Captain, President, and as a member of The Board of Directors. He won several Club Championships in both stroke and match play and along with his great friend John Alpaugh, ran the Junior Golf Program at HGCC for many years. Enthusiastic and passionate, Bill and John were instrumental in introducing a lot of kids to golf, nurturing comraderies, competition and a love for the game that has endured. Many are still members. The Club was also an excellent venue for Bill to display his keen sense of men’s fashion, not to mention bravery, by sporting some of the loudest golf pants every seen in the 70’s.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Edgewater Gardens for the care Bill was given in his final years. Memorial donations to Edgewater Residents Council would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences jwhartfuneralhome.com

We are so sorry to see such a good person leave us. He was a super guy with a great warming personality. He treated everyone with the warmest smiles and gestures. A pleasure to be around and we will all miss him. Our warmest condolences.
My warmest condolences go to the family with the passing of Bill Salter. He served our family in Ancaster and Burlington with love and compassion. He was such a wonderful person as we started out in the clothing business in Canada. We loved the always smiling Bill. Yes, he was a gentleman and a gentle man.
So sorry for the loss of Bill. He was such a great personality, always willing
to help anywhere he could. May he rest in peace.
We send our condolences to Nancy, John and family – Bill was a wonderfully warm person and a pleasure to have know for almost 50 year as well as June, his wife. Our connection was through the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, so our paths crossed many times over the years. Rest in peace, Bill.
I am saddened to learn of Bill’s death – the Salters having been “around the corner” neighbours of
ours for decades. Bill was a long-suffering golfing buddy of my late husband, Iain, and in the summer
months a well-worn shortcut through another neighbour’s garden made the distance even less. Always
lots to discuss! Happy to say that the hosta “August Moon”, a gift from Bill and June many years ago
is flourishing and will always be a reminder of a very special friendship and an exceptionally fine
person. Warm thoughts to the entire Salter family.
