Phillips, Betty Lorene. Betty passed away peacefully at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital, Dunnville on March 29, 2021, in her 98th year.
Betty is predeceased by her husband George Phillips, her older sister Hill King (Gordon) and younger sister Margaret (Peg) Cowell. She is survived by her brother George Cowell. Bette is mother of B.J. Reid (Jim) and Isaac (Nancy). She is Granny to Meggen Reid (B.J.), Jessie Pattison (Ean), Kelsey Cartwright (Andy), Brayden Phillips (Keri), Hannah Phillips, and Erin Roberts(Travis). She also is Great Granny to Sydney, Edie, Payton, Olivia, Cruz, Everett and Imogen.
Many will know Miss Bette from her years of tireless work at the “Children’s Learning Workshop” in Dunnville where she taught many local children at nursery school. Prior to that, she taught for many years in the Simcoe District with mentally and physically challenged students. In her later years she concentrated on her art – producing dozens of oil and water colour paintings and attending many classes to learn more. Bette loved to cook and bake. She enjoyed giving away plates of Christmas cookies as well as entertaining friends and family with her gourmet meals.
She cherished the times she was able to get back to the “farm” where she was born and raised. Bette fell ill because of a heart condition in late 2020 and spent her last few months across the street from where she was born. During this time she enjoyed watching the birds and deer whenever she was able.
Special thanks to Dr. Kobah, Dr. Smith, and Dr. Scallan for the time they spent with Bette. Also thanks to Rev. Whitecross for his visits and prayers, and the wonderful, caring nursing staff on the third floor at the Dunnville Hospital. A celebration of life is planned for fall 2021. Donations to Women’s Shelter Foundation, Dunnville Hospital, or Knox Presbyterian Church would be appreciated. A Private family service has taken place. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. Cherish the wonderful memories you have.
My role model – she had it all and lived to tell…. and we had many an hour together in past years reminiscing over Dunn Township beginnings and who knows where endings. One of the blessings is to have known Miss Bette. I did not see her in the past few years but she was always on my mind in times of indecision or whatever – knowing that she tackled anything that came her way. I see her characteristics in her children and knowing that they are being passed down to the next generations gives life a continuity. Rest in Peace my Dear Betty. Thoughts to BJ and Isaac and the other family members.
Our thoughts are with the family. “Miss Bette” as she was so lovingly known at pre school. Both of my children were able to be with her and share in her compassionate and caring company. She was a great lady.
Keep your memories close and share them often.
My most sincere condolences to Bettes’ Family!
Truly we all have been blessed to have Bette touch our lives! Such a wonderfully kind, loving person to have known !
I always enjoyed her visits but especially our ‘chats’ She always had some insightful words to share! Of course there was her humor! How we would laugh!!!!!
She was small of stature but she was a powerhouse of love and kindness! Especially when it came to her children and grandchildren!
Forever shining in my heart
Namaste Dearest Bette!
Roxann

Our sympathies to Bette’s family. My Dad..Doc Logan..worked for George Phillips for many years and I have many memories of both George and Bette. She was a very classy lady. My favorite memory of her was seeing her driving her white convertible around town enjoying every minute of the wind through her hair..which by the way always looked perfect….
Our prayers are with Mrs Bette Great Lady she was and the family always said hello with a big smile. Rest in peace well deserved.

Barbara Jo, Jim, Isaac and Nancy. Your mom was one of a kind! She always treated me with such kindness. She sure liked to keep busy right up into her later years. She always looked at the bright side of life, with a cheerful smile and a twinkle in her eye. I have many fond memories of the time we spent together. It always amazed me that she began her teaching career again, at around the age of 60…No stopping that Bette. Her passion and skill for art was amazing. The love for her children and grandchildren kept the Phillips glued. Got to love a Granny like Bette, filling your stomachs with great food and hearts with love. I’ll really miss my dear dear friend. ❤️
B.J. and Isaac, so many memories of your Mom have come to mind over the last couple of days. She was an elegant, genteel lady who’s classy style was displayed in her poise, her conversation, her sense of humour, her wardrobe, her home and her cars to name only a few. She was soft spoken but strong all her days.
Our sincere sympathy to you and your families as you grieve her loss.

To BJ and Isaac and all the Phillips family. The deepest condolences of all the Campbell clan on the loss of Aunt Bette. She was a fond and memorable presence in the whole Cowell family. I am sure that she, Aunt Peg and Mom are having a great reminisce right now. It has been a tough year for all of us made more so by COVID. It is not even a year since Mom died.
My fondest memory of Aunt Bette was a recent visit that she made with you, Isaac, to the Blue Cottage in Port Maitland when our family made one of our annual visits to Dunnville to visit family there. She came to the Cottage dressed in leather pants and heels so typical of her wonderful fashion sense and flair. My kids and grandkids were in awe of this lady. It was indeed wonderful to have her there and a memory I will cherish.
I continue to grieve my own mother, and feel personally the loss that you have suffered.
Fondest regards:
Liz and family

Isaac and Family,
We were saddened to hear of your Mother’s passing.
She was a beautiful sweet lady who was so well known in our town for her compassion and dedication to her “wee” students.
Treasure the beautiful memories you have of her to sustain you through the coming years.
May God comfort you entire family with His love.
Although it’s been many years since we were Lake Erie next door neighbours, my brother Dan and I were saddened to see this news. I have many fond memories of Betty at the cottage, looking tanned and glamorous in a bathing suit, or baking cookies, or just visiting with my mom. She was fun to be around (and was very generous to me as a teenager when I would babysit Isaac!)
Barbara Jo and Isaac, please accept our sympathies. Your mom was something special.
