Shawn Edward McKay.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Shawn on Friday April 4, 2025 at the age of 47.
Survived by his loving parents Cortland and Margaret McKay. Proud and loving father to Jessica and her daughter Maddy; Gina and Erica. Lovingly remembered by his sister Melanie Hempel (Rick) and by nephews Michael (Brooke), Jacob, nieces Amanda and Nikki. Shawn will be missed by his cousins, coworkers at Winland Foods and his many friends.
Shawn’s passion for nature and the outdoors was well known. Camping, canoeing or biking all things he enjoyed, especially sharing them with the kids. During the past year Amazon was a fixture of Shawn’s daily routine, gadgets and gear and the latest items for camping or adventures! The things that prepared him for the coming Spring and new adventures, the things that gave him hope and sustained him.
Special thanks to Dr. Tozer whom Shawn had the utmost respect and admiration for, Dr. Shaw and the Juravinski Team. Leslie and the nursing team for the care at home, we thank you.
All are welcome to the Celebration of Life at South Cayuga Baptist Church, 3475 Haldimand Road 20, Dunnville on Saturday April 26th with a brief Tribute at 1:00pm with celebration following until 4:00pm. Memorial donations to the Juravinski Cancer Centre would be appreciated. Online condolences jwhartfuneralhome.com

We are so sorry for your loss.
We knew Shawn from Austin’s Park. Although Shawn usually kept to himself, he would always smile and nod or say hello in passing.
We would often see him out in his canoe in the bay enjoying the solitude.
A man of few words who knew what he enjoyed in life.
Rest easy Shawn. 🙏
Karen and Donald

My deepest condolences to all of you. Such a terrible loss.
Our thoughts and, prayers are with you and, your family at this time.
Not many could conquer the feats Shawn and I did on our numerous canoeing trips through Algonquin park. Doing that extra portage, to get that much further into the backcountry, where he and I would set up camp on a beautiful deserted lake, or next to a pristine river. Driving out to the east coast, with many camping adventures on the way. I will truly miss my best friend Shawn. I pray that God comforts Mr and Mrs McKay, and Melanie for the loss of a great soul. May God truly bless you all in this time of sadness. And Shawn, we will see each other again in the Kingdom. Bless you my friend.
I’ve known you a very long time. It didn’t matter what time of day you always nodded or waved to everyone that passed by the house or said hello. Your no longer in pain Rest in peace Shawn walk your dog every day now.
Didn’t have the opportunity to meet Shawn’s family, during the years we conquered the great white north outdoors, and the times he came 40 mins one way just to watch and hang with friends jam out Blues and have a good laugh or get gritty with politics and religion and that’s why he shared moments in time that I had the pleasure to enjoy…sadly now I’m typing my condolences to his family. Sucks getting old eh? Love you Shawn, catch you on the other side brother. Love Shin
Our deepest sympathies on the loss of your son and brother.
I’ll always remember the Algonquin adventures and Blues jam sessions with Shawn. Good man that I’ll miss.
Our deepest sympathies on the loss of your son, brother and uncle.
I knew Shawn mainly through our mutual friend Dwayne. We were both fortunate to have known such a kind and peaceful human being. While I only went on a couple outdoor adventures with the two of them, both times Shawn’s level headedness encountering unexpected dangers kept me calm. Whether it was venturing outside of his tent to investigate a large crashing sound that woke us up in the middle of the night in Algonquin (was it a bear!? 😨) or when the three of us had to traverse what seemed like 2m high waves in a Canadian Tire inflatable to cross from Cedar Island back to the Kingston (Fort Henry) mainland after a joyous night of camping.
However, perhaps Shawn‘s greatest feat of calmness was when he was debating politics and religion with Dwayne, keeping his good friend from spiralling too much! 😋
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. They say the good die young and that was definitely the case with Shawn. May his kind soul rest in peace. 🙏🕊️💐
Sending our sincere condolences to all the family ❤️ Bill and Marlene Gillies (Cook)
