Hart, John Warren Jr.
June 27, 1968- January 17, 2026
Our family is heartbroken to announce the sudden death of our beloved husband, father, poppop, son, and friend to so many. For those who knew John, a void will be felt in many ways. John loved his version of a good story made great by his delivery and would rather tell it than be on the receiving line. He was gifted with an ability to tell a story, true or otherwise, as well as simply talk. He had many hats he wore. From funeral director and owner, to biker, ( not to be confused with a bicycle ), cigar aficionado, member of the milk house gang, political consultant (to those who would listen), hunter extraordinaire (his words), whiskey sommelier, decoy and gun collector, story teller, and most of all a good human being. He will be remembered by his hunting group for his awesome culinary skills and hosting capabilities, his Florida travel partners that he was so looking forward to joining in a few weeks, his whiskey tasting St. Patrick’s bar touring groupies, anyone interested in his arsenal of jokes and for those who needed a hand in any situation. His professional skills shone in difficult circumstances and he never forgot that all families, regardless of circumstances, must be dealt with compassion and care.
He will be truly missed by his family. His wife, Leanne, will deeply miss his support and love and his ability to make her feel treasured and important. John was fiercely proud of all of his family and the paths and partnerships they have chosen. John named all of his sons, -and proudly held them from the beginning. He could be impatient when they did not listen to his advice but sometimes too much of a free thing loses its value. John will be deeply missed by his sons Duncan, Drake, Davis and Mitchell as well as his three additional daughters who he loved to embarrass but whom he greatly respected for their understanding and care of the Hart boys, Keshia, Bre and Neesha. His grandchildren Megan, Wyatt, Teegan, Peyton and Hayes who will not know the joy he could have brought to their lives but will be told how precious they were to him. He has left a space around each of us, that can’t be filled but he would be grinning and saying, “What do you expect from greatness” . John was not shy to share his opinion, even unwarranted, but it always came from his love to share his knowledge. He has joined our beloved Meg, his mom and Dad, John and Marg, good friend Rob in the next chapter, sharing tales from here and how much they all have been missed in our lives.
John was wonderful at supporting his community as funeral director and owner. We do ask the community to give us grace as we transition over this next period, but do know he will be a guiding force in helping us forward to carry on under his name.
We invite you to help us celebrate the impact John had on our lives with a visitation which is to be held at the J.W. Hart Funeral Home, 113 Lock St. E., Dunnville on Wednesday, January 21 from noon to 8 pm. A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, January 22 at 1 pm at the Dunnville Hunters and Anglers Club, 237 McLaughlin Rd., Dunnville. In lieu of flowers, we ask for something greatly needed at this time. We simply ask you to show a gesture of kindness to a stranger in your community over the next few days, weeks or months. Hold your family tight, and speak often of love to those you care for. Lastly tell a joke, good or bad. Know the big guy, with his own dress code, will be looking down, smiling with pride on all his life has accomplished and take credit for how it can positively shape our future going forward.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love Nicholas and Lori Hughes

Our sincere condolences to the Hart family. John was a wonderful man and such a huge help when we lost our son in 2014. Thinking of you all during this difficult time. He will never be forgotten.
We are so deeply sorry to the family for losing a very special man. There are many memories but one stands out and is very telling of what kind of human being John was- A few years ago I posted that if anyone had any extra teaspoons that St. Michaels school would be glad to take them. Within an hour I got a private message from John , ” How many do you need and when do you need them by”. He explained that his children went there ( we remember his children very well) and that he likes to do things for his community. 150 teaspoons arrived the next week. It was so very generous of him and he didn’t need any public recognition for it, he just did it. His family and friends will very much miss him and the community in which he lived will feel the loss as well. Again, condolences on a great man gone too soon- I know that sweet Megan was there waiting for him.

I was in high school with John and he was in my sister’s grade. I know she has fond memories of their youth but mine are moreso from my experience with the funeral home and his gifts as a director. He was held in high regard by our dad, Ron Speer and dad wouldn’t consider any place but John’s funeral home for his own needs. In the passing of dad and our brother, John felt like an extension of us. He made the process easy and comfortable. It felt like going home. Many an evening, we would drive the 2 hrs south to Dunnville for visitations of dear friends’ family members. Often John stood at the top of the stairs and opened his arms for a big hug. We were being hosted in John’s house and his space allowed us to grieve, cry and laugh together in remembrance. I am forever grateful for those evenings that brought us all together, in one place and show our love for each other. He will be greatly missed.
I first met John at the butcher shop. He was always so kind, generous and hilarious. I saw him last week and Neesha and I enjoyed some laughs with him. I will miss his sense of humor! What a loss for his family and friends. Sending love and hugs.

He was always telling me about his beautiful grandkids and how much he loved them and how much he enjoyed watching them! Our town will surely feel this loss for years to come, sending love and prayers to Leeanne and the boys and their families! may God grace you all with the strength to get through the hard days. God Bless!

I was saddened to hear of the passing of John Hart. We had a chance to connect a couple of months ago, and it was clear he cared deeply about his community and the people he served.
Anyone who chooses this profession understands the responsibility that comes with it — to show up for families during some of their hardest moments and to do so with compassion and integrity. From everything I’ve seen and heard, that commitment mattered to him.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family, his team at J.W. Hart Funeral Home, and the Dunnville community during this time.

My sincere condolences and prayers to the dear and near ones of John especially his beloved wife Leanne and their children and grandchildren and all those who came to know and love John . It’s a great loss for all of us . I have known John over 18 years and worked with John and Leanne for several years for funeral services in Hagersville and Dunnville. He was very generous to St. Michael’s parish: to our altar servers who helped with funeral Masses . St. Michael’s Cemetery Cross & Crucifix was built by him. He had supported me in all our projects.
He was a simple man with a generous heart.
I certainly will miss him . He was a great friend of mine. May his soul Rest in Peace.

JW was a great guy in a boat. Unforgettable, are our personal and heartfelt conversations. He touched me deeply as he spoke of his family and the loss of his daughter. JW was a gem. Words cannot adequately express the depth of my feelings for this kind man.
Leanne and family. It’s taken me a couple of days to get my head around the news and think of what I could say to pay tribute to a man I barely knew – so I can’t imagine what you are going through.
I only met John a couple of times as our paths crossed coincidentally but when we did meet, there were things that were very clear from our short conversations. John was both a smart and a wise man. He spoke to me as a peer, which I suppose we are, having graduated just a year apart, but having been a business owner for much longer than I, he could have spoken down to me but he didn’t. We chatted about a few things related to our common vocation and I could tell he was a man of conviction and compassion.
Having been a ‘competitor’ for nearly 8 years, I have heard story after story of how “John is John” – there was never an air about him, he was just John. His compassion is the other thing that I heard so much about. It was never about looking like or acting as if he was compassionate, he actually was. He was real, he cared and this is his legacy.
Leanne and your family, and to the community of Dunnville, on behalf of Ballard Minor Funeral Home and all of the family care team at Cooper Family Funeral Homes, I send my condolences and I pray that some small comfort will come from the outpouring of support that you are reading on this page and in all other ways, of people far and wide who have been touched by the life of your dear husband, father and grandfather.

Leeanne and family ….
Shocked and saddened to hear of your loss. Didn’t know John all that well until we had family business dealings with him. What a terrific guy, you captured him perfectly in his obituary. He truly will be missed not only by the family he loved but by the contacts and the community he touched so deeply. May he rest in peace and in the eternal light of Christ. May you be comforted knowing how much he meant to so many he touched in our time of grief.

I am so sorry to hear this. John was one of the most amazing person I’ve met. I called a lot of funeral homes when my dad passed. Honestly he was the only one that took the time and patience to listen and answer all of my silly questions. He had a knack for putting people at ease. On behalf of my whole family we want to express our deepest condolences to you and your family. John was one of the best. Thoughts and prayers to all.
Saddened to learn of John,s Passing
My condolences to Leanne and family.
John brought joy he was a great guy
Cousin John will be missed at our Hart family gatherings. In times of celebration or sorrow, he was there with his wit and that wry smile, as well as his compassion and listening ear. We are proud of the vocation he chose and the meaningful mark he has left on so many in the Dunnville community and beyond. Blessings to Leanne and their family at this challenging time.
I am truly heartbroken at the passing of John. He was a kind, gentle and very caring person. When my husband, Dan Pitts, passed away almost 3 years ago, John’s kindness, support, advice and guidance were invaluable. He made this very painful and difficult time in my life, and in the lives of our family, somewhat easier to cope with.
Thank you, John. Rest in peace 🙏
I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. Sending love and prayer to his family and friends. We were in the same grade in high school.
So sorry to hear about Johns passing. He was a very good friend and all around good guy. John went out of his way to help anyone out, touched many people in the Dunnville community. He will be missed by many. Condolences to the Hart family at this time of loss.

Dear Leanne and family.
Please accept our heartfelt condolences. We are so sorry to hear of John’s unexpected and sudden passing.
I grew up with John and therefore knew him for nearly my entire life.
We played on the same hockey and lacrosse teams from age 5 to 15, while his father coached our hockey teams through that period.
John was a great friend and teammate and I have many fond memories of growing up together. He embraced life and became such an important and impactful member of the community.
I would only see John sporadically during the last 30 years when I visited Dunnville, however I always enjoyed those interactions.
Wishing you and your family the strength and grace to help you moving forward.
You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
God bless,
Scott & Katarina Mazi
Leanne, boys and families; I cannot begin to express how sad our entire family was to hear of John’s loss. His contributions to our community and so many members within it are boundless. We have known John since childhood and his parents as well and have so many young memories – our neighbourhood, hockey, hunting etc. lol Since adulthood we have been ever grateful for his professional services. His empathy, kindness and humour when it was needed was a gift we cannot begin to repay. He has helped so many people navigate through some of the most painful times. Now you must navigate this journey without him. Please hear his words as he might have said them, remember all the most wonderful times you have spent with him and may they comfort you as much as possible. Much love from the Gifford Family – Todd, Sherry, Jacob, Carly, Ryleigh, Myles, Hailey and Ethan
To the Hart Family. What great memories we had of John during our time together at Humber College. Quick with his wit, he was someone who always lightened up the room. I’m sure you know this already.
Our deepest condolences to you all.
Praying for you in this time of loss and grief. May you draw comfort from the many memories of love and laughter that you enjoyed together over the years.
Offering my most sincere condolences to the family, to his many friends, and to the community.
The outpouring from so many people gives testament to the mark and legacy John has left in our community and the impact he had on the lives of people with whom he crossed paths with.
R.I.P. John 🙏

RIP John. He was a wonderful man. I talked to him during the loss of Andy’s parents and a number of times on the phone. One time a few weeks ago. Deepest condolences to the Hart family.
I am completely shocked and saddened by the news. I was just with him the day before at the funeral home. He gave me words of wisdom to move forward after recently loosing my mother. We had a good giggle about snow removal
In different provinces, we talked about our love of bikes and had a good squeeze before departing. He was just a great person, I wish Leann and his family many good memories to carry you through this difficult time. My condolences ♥️

John was a gift to many in their worst days. When my father died, I called him and he said, “Cathy, I’ve got you.” His kindness, guidance and generosity carried me through. I am so sad that John will no longer be there to “catch” people in their grief but I am told that his team at J.W. Hart are second to none. My deepest condolences to John’s family at this most heartbreaking time.
My sincere condolences to John’s family. It takes a special type of person to do his best for us on our worst days. He’s helped my family on several occasions and managed to make each time feel very personal and special. I can’t help but smile when I recall him cranking the AC/DC from his car at my brother Garry’s graveside service last year. He’ll definitely be missed by the community and beyond.
My deepest condolences to his family always a nice man he left us too soon he touched a lot of people in Dunnville over his life ,RIP John
Our deepest condolences to you Leanne, your boys and their families.

It was a shock to learn of his death. I enjoyed working with him in the Catholic church when there was a funeral. He was an amazing person. He helped when Yvette died (Eliza’s Sheridan’s daughter) in 2013. We will miss his compassion and his heart. We send our deepest prayers to all of the family.

Dunnville has lost a very kind and good man. Our hearts go out to Leanne and his boys. Deepest condolences to all the family.
My heart goes out to Johns family.. he certainly will be greatly missed.. He was so accommodating and kind to my family when we were dealing with our own sorrow… I’ll never forget him happily blasting my dad’s favourite song at the end of his service. It meant so much..John meant so much…to all of us.. He will never be forgotten
I know this is late coming but I just became aware this even happened. When I was barely 19 I lost my mother and John was amazing with us for her funeral although at the time I was too young and too shocked to truly appreciate it. Many years later my Grandmother passed away and my sister was unable to make it in time for her funeral. John held myGrandma for an extra 24 hrs and allowed my 2 sisters and I to have an hour alone with her so my sister could say goodbye. John was one of the kindest hearted people I have ever met and I am lucky to have had him touch my life. His family should be so proud to have his blood running in his veins. ❤️
