Cherished son of Todd Meyer and Lorraine Gibbs (Shawn Hansler). Loving brother to Rachelle, Tanisha, Ginger, Bethany and Makayla. Partner in life’s great adventures for 9 years with Megan Winfrey. Dedicated father to Sophia, Tessa and Dean.
Fun uncle to Elora and all the children of his extended family and friends.
Predeceased by father Edward (Andrea), Sonya and step-sister Keshia.
Lovingly remembered and missed by many family clans – Gibbs, Meyer, Graham, Dionne, Beaulieau, Olm and Winfrey; his work family at Allied Marine; the many, many band members over the years; and the countless friends who walked with him along the path of life.
Derek loved his children, his family, his friends and animals (especially his cats). For those who knew Derek for even five minutes, he brought the fun and the music. He was full of life, often larger than life and loved nothing more than to pick up a guitar to entertain (and amaze) those around him. Derek believed in working hard and never did anything unless he could do his best at it. From skateboarding to welding, creating music to fishing, Derek was all-in.
He’s left all of us too soon; but he leaves us with a life of well-lived memories.
A Celebration of Derek’s life will be held on Thursday March 13th at 4 pm at the Optimist Club, 101 Main St Dunnville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Pathstones Mental Health Niagara, child and youth mental health services. Online condolences jwhartfuneralhome.com

We wanted you to be able to hug your kids again.
But now we just can say “remember when”?
We are all going to gather to say goodbye to our family member and a friend. We know you will see you one day this isn’t the end.
We all wish we could say so much to you when you were here,
But I know you’ll always be near.
We will hold you close to our heart,
I wish we didn’t have to be apart.
As you watch over your kids from above, make sure you know we all will show them how much they were loved.

I met Derek back 2018, and we became friends and later co-workers.
Derek was quite the character, and as many knew him knew he was a very solid man, a man who walks the talk, a man that always tried to do better at work. A man that always thought about his children. Yes, Derek was a solid man. I will miss him greatly as a friend and as a co-worker. God bless and may Derek be the bestest guardian angel to his children. God bless to all is family ♥️♥️♥️

Derek…..my heart is so heavy right now. I just try to remember when you and Dillon were kids. You always made me smile whenever you were around. You were kind, funny, respectful, and always smiling. You even loved my cat, Cyprus. You would laugh at ANYTHING!!!! Your parents did a fantastic job raising you. May your family finally find some peace. “Shine on you crazy diamond”!!

Sorry for your loss. Derrick was a great guy to work with. My condolences.
Derek was a brother to me throughout our teens. We formed a band together, wrote awesome tunes, had deep meaningful conversations about life, faith and religion. I always enjoyed his company.
Before his passing I was hoping we would reconnect soon (life’s difficulties living far away), and now I won’t have that opportunity unfortunately. I will forever miss you brother and will never forget the memories we had together.
