It is with immense sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Dan, June 10,2024 at HWMH due to complications from COPD.
Born March 1, 1950 in Picton, Ontario, he is predeceased by his parents Melvin and Edna (Foster) Dulmage, brother Dennis and sister Ruth. Survived by sister Susan (Gary) of B.C. Loving husband of Glenna (Dockrill) and beloved father of Bekki (Tom Vallee) and Gord Dulmage. Adored Bubba of Tanner, Tristan, Aidan, Aivree (Riley) and Danika Vallee, Brayden, Devon and Dustin Dulmage. Loved father-in-law of Shelley Dulmage. Wonderful brother in law to Roberta, Pat, Trenny and Kevin, Joe and Nancy and Sean. Predeceased by brother in laws Lionel Jr. and Dan Dockrill, Roger Young. Lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews and their families.
Excelling in academics (Ontario Scholar) and athletics, in his Grade 13 year, football was reinstated, with one set of equipment to be shared by junior and senior teams. Dan loved the game immediately, in spite of having to don sweaty equipment just used by the Juniors.
Playing only one year of high school football in Picton, Dan was recruited to McGill University by coach Tom Mooney, who never saw him play football, but was impressed by his skill and agility on the basketball court. There he completed his BSc degree, while being an All-Canadian defensive lineman for the McGill Redmen. He and Glenna, his high school sweetheart, married in1970 during his last year at McGill. Drafted to the Edmonton Eskimos in 1971, he declined the offer, as he was entering the Dental School program at Western.
Playing for the Mustangs, he was All Canadian defensive end both years, helping the team win the College Bowl in 1971. Later he was inducted into Western’s Hall of Fame both for team and individual performance. His McGill team was inducted into the university’s Hall of Fame at homecoming last year and Dan was sorry to miss his ‘Mooney Men’ reunion this year. Dan and Glenna made treasured life-long friends from their Montreal and London days.
Having completed his 5 yrs of university eligibility, Dan was pursued by the Ticats, who acquired his rights from Edmonton. With permission from his Dean, he joined the Hamilton Ticats in 1973, commuting from studies in London to Hamilton 4 days a week and flying on weekends to games across the country during the fall. A very busy time, but Dan was able to graduate with his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1975, on schedule.
Dan and Glenna, moved to Dunnville in 1975 where he started his dental career. They settled into a busy life raising Bekki and Gord. Dan happily lent his expertise to coaching the Dunnville High School football team, impacting many young players with the love of the game, some of whom went on to play college ball. For years after, this group of young men would arrive at the front door, caroling at Xmas. Many fond memories for all. Continuing to be active in sports, Dan pitched Fastball for the Dunnville Expos and played recreational basketball, racquetball and squash. He spent many sunny afternoons playing golf at the Dunnville Golf and Country Club. Serving many years in the Lion’s Community Service Club, he enjoyed his time on stage at numerous Lioness productions. Dan was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing and snowmobiling, passing his love of nature along to his children.
He was a skilled and well respected dentist, his friendly and reassuring manner helping many a young ( and some older) patients overcome their fears. Through Dunnville Dental Arts he was a valued member of the community, sponsoring many teams and charitable events. He was proud to have his son Gord join the practice in 2001, ensuring continued service to the community by Dulmage Dental Arts.
Throughout his life’s journey, Dan acquired an eclectic assortment of friends. To know him was to love him. If you were lucky enough to be in his inner circle, you know his sense of humour was second to none and definitely unique. He was a remarkable man, a humorous raconteur who loved to be surrounded by family and friends. His grandchildren were an endless source of joy to ‘Bubba’. His love of sports has been passed to this new generation, and he happily spent many hours as a spectator watching his grandchildren play numerous sports. They have wonderful memories him stating their full name, followed by “Quite a story”.Truly a one of a kind, he will be missed by all who were lucky enough to have had the opportunity to spend time in his presence. To be sure, ‘Dan’ stories will be told through happy tears for years to come.
Dan was born in Prince Edward County, and remained a ‘County Boy’ at heart. Well known and respected throughout the county, in 2013 he was inducted into the Prince Edward County Sports Hall of Fame, allowing him to continuously remind his grandchildren, with a wink, that he was a “Four Time Hall of Famer”. His most beloved times were those spent at the family property ‘back at the lake’. Reconnecting with old neighbours and childhood friends, he became part of the local band , “The Lakeshore Boys”, playing the stand up bass. Performing at local venues and recording a CD, which was always playing in Dan’s truck. Billy Ostrander, neighbour, band mate, and skilled musician, wrote a lovely tribute to Dan’s hospitality, called ‘Dan’s Place’, a song that speaks to all of our hearts.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated and caring staff at HWMH for their exceptional support during this most difficult time. You all are truly a blessing to our community.

A private family service will be held at a later date in the County. We are taking Danny home. I met Dan in 1975 , when he moved to Dunnville and associated with Dr Joe Telesnicki.
I was the Dental Sales Representative for Dan.
Dan and I became great friends over the years.
Dan would like to go to the NPDA golf day and meet with some of his classmates.
Dan took me and some of his friends to the Dunnville golf course , and we had a great dinner afterwards.
We thought the dinner was over until Dan said to me, “ Do you want another one “ and I thought it was a beer, and I said yes, 5 minutes later in came a steak with all the trimmings.
There are many more stories, that were classics like the time Dan Gord and I went to Portland Oregon to see a dental manufacturing plant.
That was a 4.5 hour flight and I sat between Dan and Gord both ways .
Dan was not only a Great Client but a Great friend.
It won’t be the same with Dan’s passing.

It is so interesting to read about his success in this field and playing for the Tiger Cats. It is notable that he was a scholar and achieved great success in the Dental field as well. I enjoyed the privilege of playing cards with him twice a month. It was an opportunity to share hunting and fishing and other tall tales. He could be relied upon to come up with some strange poker games. I am better for knowing him. He will be missed. Our condolences. May he Rest In Peace.

Very sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. My deepest condolences to the Dulmage Family. Dan became my dentist when I first moved to Dunnville. I always had pain issues at the dentist but Dan made you feel comfortable and relaxed making those issues go away. We always had lots to talk about as I played University football and was and avid fisherman and hunter as well. He once made a temporary repair to one of my back molars to keep it as long as I could. He said I would be lucky to get a couple years out of it. Well…15 years later and Gord is now my dentist and I still have that temporary repair. We laugh about it and how Dan was able to fit those big hands into the back of my mouth to make the repair. He was a wonderful man and a great dentist. May he rest in peace.

When it was not football season at McGill Dan and I would often play squash and during those matches he would taunt me repeatedly by saying that I would never outplay “the dancing bear”
– and I rarely did but I will miss him; as will many.

We are so sad for all the family and friends who will miss Dan greatly. We loved him as our dentist first where he actually made me look forward to a dentist visit for the first time ever!. Continued to enjoy his company in Lions, playing basketball and golf, and then as member of our poker group. And of course watching our grandchildren play sports. Always a smile and kind word from Dan. An especially fun memory was of Dan performing Elvis at the Lioness January Thaw. His performance brought the house down! Unforgettable man!

To this very day, whenever the boys of the 78-79 DSHS Championship football get together, Big Dan is in our conversation.

My heart felt condolences to Glenna, Bekki, Gord and their families on the passing of Dan. Either Dan or Gord has been our family dentist for over 40 years. Dan was so gentle and friendly. He never made me afraid of going to the dentist. He’d always give my arm a little squeeze when he was done, as if to say “see, that wasn’t so bad.” One incident I remember happened when I was 19 and getting 4 wisdom teeth pulled. I think there must have been about 10 needles for freezing. Things were going along pretty good till the last tooth. Freezing must have started to come out because when he went to pull on that last tooth, I bit down on his fingers. All I remember him saying was ” well it looks like we might need a little more freezing”. He was a kind and gentle man and will be truly missed.

Dunnville has lost one of its local heroes.
I worked for Dr. Dan for 18 years as one of his Dental Hygienists and what a ride it was! I mostly remember lots of laughs and jokes, as well as making lots of wonderful relationships with staff and patients alike.
I should have known what I was getting into when I presented myself for my interview and it was conducted in one of Dr. Dan’s ops whilst he was working on a patient with his assistant! Egads!
Dr. Dan will be sorely missed by all who knew him…family…friends…the Dunnville community.

There aren’t enough words in the world to describe how incredible of a human Danny was, nor are there enough to sum up how devastating it is to hear of his passing.
I grew up next to Danny’s place in the county and spent many nights under his roof or on the cottage deck, listening to his many incredible stories and seeing him play the stand up bass with my Poppa Bill. My desire to play music started with The Lakeshore Boys, which will remain one of the greatest gifts I’ve been given.
Danny taught me what true kindness and hospitality looked like and I’ve always strived to offer others the kindness that he has offered me, my family, and my friends. Just a couple years ago I had called him to ask if some friends and I could camp on his property and I was met with one of the warmest greetings, a short but wonderful catch up, and an enthusiastic “of course!”
No one ever went hungry. No one ever got left out. No one ever left without a smile on their face. Danny had a heart of gold.
I will forever cherish my memories of Danny. I hope to leave the world a better place, just as he did. My deepest and most sincere condolences to Danny’s family.

I’m sorry to read this news. We met once or twice , but my dad talked about him whenever we drove by the Dulmage house. We were cousins of sorts. I believe his grandfather and my grandmother were siblings. I’d have to look that up. Condolences to everyone that loved him. He sounds like he was an incredibly special man.

My mother and Danny’s father were first cousins. We had so many lovely dinners at the Dulmage family home at Long Point. Melvin, Danny’s dad was so proud of him becoming a dentist and all his earlier accomplishments. I remember Melvin beaming when telling us about Danny giving him that Jeep. Our deepest condolences to Danny’s family.
I am so sad to hear of Dan’s departure from our world, that he made his way to a place where he is at peace and healthy to play all his many games as he did in his earlier life. May Glenna, Gord, Bekki and families rejoice in his ever flowing ‘quips’ made legendary by repeating them over and over to your hearts desire. RIP Doc Dan

Writing this with a lump in my throat..Dan and I our grew up with our farms backing on to each other so as a kid and neighbor,classmates at the one room school,we passed through our “tender years”. I was somewhat the adopted son to his mum as she would always make a place for you at the kitchen table. I was a dropout from high school when Glenna and Dan encouraged me to go back and try again… I played center on the senior football team and two years later I graduated ! Big thanks to them both.
I could write a book and someday I might on the stories growing up in the County and having Dan, Glenna and the rest of the Dulmage family as friends .Dans mum was a saint who always guided us young bucks down the straight and narrow and I seen a lot of her in Dan over the years.For the last few years I was calling Dan or he would call me for any news from his home community. The cottage at the Lake was always a buzz of visitors and local friends whenever he was down on his summer vacations.He always had food aplenty for the gang….much like his mum used to.
I’ll miss you ol buddy, can’t believe your gone. Thanks for the memories and all the best to his family.Knowing we will meet again.

Involved with Dan since his arrival in Dunnville. A great friend. He volunteered to help coach our high school football team. What an asset!!!!!. We did a lot of jogging together back in those early days. He will be missed.

Dan was a special friend from the minute we met him. He was a painless and gentle Dentist always!
He loved to attend parties at our house and especially liked the Creamsickle punch we made for parties.
He enjoyed playing Racquetball with Dave and exchanging stories with me as well-always a gentleman.

I first meet Danny at PECI in the fall of 1966. He helped me discover what Prince Edward County was all about… his wonderful stories and his love of the County was contagious… Danny, an extremely interesting and interested salt of the earth person a great friend… years later in 1973 Patti Love and I were in Washington DC and turned on the tv in our hotel room. There was a football game on, and my favourite team, the Hamilton Ticats were playing. And the star of the game? Danny Dulmage!
Later that year Patti and I moved to London Ontario and who did we find? The amazing Glenna, Danny and baby Gordie! Dan was working on finishing his degree in dentistry at Western University… he talks me into being his one and only patient…he did a wonderful job giving me teeth that are still with me and in pretty darn good shape… not long after he became ‘Dr Danny the Dentist from Dunnville’… So many stories… Dan has left behind a wonderful legacy… one of a kind… very much missed but never forgotten… Patti Love-Forester and Bob Forester

Our thoughts are with your family. Dan was a giant teddy bear, except when he was attempting to put those mitts of his in your mouth !! He was a caring, compassionate and gentle man. Seeing him as a dentist was a bonus to our whole community.

We’ll always remember many times at his house in the County and Cottage by the lake, playing music with everyone and the delicious barbecues and bocce ball. We will miss his quirky sense of humour!

Dear Glenna, Becki and Gordon,
I was one of Dan’s teammates on the McGill 1968 and 1969 teams. My wife Thelma and I offer you are our heartfelt condolences. In the beginning, I didn’t know Dan that well. We were about the same age, but Dan played on D and I played on O. he was from ON and I am from QC, he studied Science/Math and I was in Business and he was a lot bigger than I was. But I respected what he meant to our team – he was an integral part of our D and when he was injured in 1969 our chances of winning the Vanier Cup were significantly reduced. In our reunion years we got to know each other better through our conversations and of course kidding around. I always admired how Dan interacted with Tom Mooney, I could not deal with Tom like Dan did.
I am doubtful that I will be able to join you in July but our thoughts and prayers will be with you. The number of people offering condolences to you is a real tribute to the man that Dan was.

To Glenna & family…My sincere condolences to all Dan’s loved ones at this sad occasion. I haven’t seen Dan since our days at P.E.C.I. all those years ago but often thought of him & remember that kind, gentle, fun-loving guy with the easy smile & soft-spoken charm. He was one I could look up to during those turbulent youthful years in Picton, as a teammate who always had time to offer a friendly word and pat on the back. I will continue to remember Dan as one of the good guys I was fortunate to know back then and hope there is some comfort for his family in remembering your years together.

I was watching the Ticats vs Saskatchewan and Dan came to my mind . I looked up to see how many years he played with the Ticats and I
I saw his obituary. So sad to hear that. I was very fortunate to have known Dan during dental school. He was lots of fun and a real genuine man who accomplished many things in his life, very humble and down to earth he will be missed by everyone he came in contact with. So long Danny boy!

My sincere condolences to the entire Dulmage Family. Coach Dan was such a gift to our High School Football team in the late 70’s and early 80’s. When I walked on the field for my first practice (nervous) he made me feel welcome, called me Artis (I didn’t know why but it was after Artis Gilmore, NBA player) and I was a tall skinny kid, who knew nothing about Football, but Coach Dan made us all feel welcome. Nobody has ever called me Artis since and its a cherished special memory. Dan, was instrumental (along with the other coaches) in resurrecting the Football program from nothing to winning several district Championships. Dr. Dan became our family dentist and served my parents until he retired. Such a great man, with a greater heart and will cherish the memories of those amazing years at Dunnville High School. RIP Coach Dan.
