Wayne Edward Bluhm
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Edward Bluhm. Wayne passed away peacefully at Dunnville War Memorial Hospital on Thursday, January 22, 2026, with his loving family by his side, at the age of 87 ⅝ (always the mathematician).
Wayne is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 65 years, Shirley (née Woods). He was a much-loved father to his children Jeff (Donna) and Susan (Dave), and a proud and loving “Poppy” to his grandchildren Blaire (Spencer), Kyle (Lauren), Kristyn, and Shayne (Ally). He was a cherished great-grandfather to Liliana, with another great-grandchild, Baby Gallant, expected soon. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Margaret (née Dowd), and is survived by his sister Jeanette Chovance. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Wayne’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his career as a teacher at Central Elementary and Dunnville Secondary School. Former students fondly remember his calm, patient demeanour and his remarkable ability to make mathematics understandable. He took great care to ensure every student grasped the lesson before moving on, leaving a lasting impression both academically and personally.
A man of faith, Wayne served as an elder at Knox Presbyterian Church for many years. He treasured time spent with family and held a special fondness for yearly summer vacations to Manitoulin Island, where many cherished memories were made.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital for their compassionate and attentive care.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Haldimand War Memorial Hospital or Dunnville Knox Presbyterian Church would be appreciated by the family.
Visitation will take place at J.W. Hart Funeral Home, 113 Lock Street East, Dunnville, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. A private service will be held at a later date.
To Shirley and the rest of the family my sincere condolences. I can recall the first time I enter Knox Wayne and Shirley welcomed me and made me feel at home. Rest In Peace.

We are so sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. He was my teacher in grade 8 at Central school, always soft spoken and had the patience of a saint. A few years later we became neighbours in a wonderful neighborhood for many years. Our condolences to Shirley, Jeff , Susan and Families.

So sorry to hear the passing away of Mr. Bluhm. I was one of the fortunate ones to have him as a teacher at DSS.. always a quiet, compassionate man. He will certainly be missed by family and friends. I’m so sorry to hear of Mr. Bluhm’s passing. He was my Grade 11 and Grade 12 math teacher as well as my neighbour. He not only was a great man but also a great teacher–teaching math is an Art rather than a science–very difficult to teach, and he definitely had the knack! Wayne was also one of the coaches of our high school hockey team in 1971, along with Don Vail, who took us to a Sossa Zone 2 championship. Wayne was interviewed on CHML radio just before our championship game and he referred to me as the “spark plug” on the team–that probably meant that I sucked but that I tried hard–it meant a lot to me that he acknowledge my effort! I also remember Wayne catching a puck bare handed that was shot up onto our bench during one of the games. The players were in disbelief as it was a hard shot he he caught it effortlessly–we found out later that he had been quite the goalie in his youth!
My thoughts are with the family and I will always remember my times with Mr. Bluhm fondly.

Mr. Bluhm was my favourite teacher ever. I think of him often. His calm, relaxed, patient and compassionate manner helped me to excel in math. RIP you beautiful man.
I was fortunate to Mr. Bluhm as both home room and math teacher at DSS. All students who walked into his classroom were lucky to have him as their math teacher. Who can forget the coloured chalk and squiggly lines.

My sincere condolences to the Bluhm family. My Bluhm had a precise schedule for our math class and an incredible way with his students. He was so understanding and compassionate. His ability to instill self-confidence in his students was as amazing as he ability to comfort and console his students following the loss of one of our students. He will never be forgotten.

I’m very sorry to hear of Mr. Bluhm’s passing. Wayne was my Math teacher in Grade 11 and 12 ; he was a great teacher (in a subject that is very difficult to teach) and a great person. Wayne was also my hockey coach and he and Don Vail took our high school team to the Sossa Zone 2 championship in 1971, one step away from the All Ontario championships. I remember Wayne catching an errant puck that was headed towards us on the bench, with his bare hand. We all looked at each other in astonshment not realizing until later than he had been a talented goalie in his youth! My thoughts are with you at this time and will always have fond memories of Wayne.

I have so many fond memories from back when Mr. Bluhm was my teacher at Central School, then Dunnville High School, and more recently as we got together for our monthly bridge games and social time. I have always admired your supportive family and it is a testament to the comfort and quality of life that your dear husband, father and grandfather was able to live in his later years. Shirley, I will always cherish my best and earliest memories when you and Wayne would regularly visit our family chalet home on the shores of Lake Erie…always with those “individual bags of chips” for us kids to enjoy. I know I was not Wayne’s best Math student in high school but I sure appreciated his patience and ability to make sense of all those complicated formulas for me. He was steady, patient, understanding and most of all so very kind.

Wayne was such a fine man. I first met him when I went to DSS as a VP. He was so kind and welcoming and I will always remember how, at a staff party, he would immediately come over to my husband and make him welcome. Wayne was a gentleman. He was also a fine teacher, kind, quiet and had that ability to make students understand and like mathematics.
He was a role model for us all. It was a privilege to have worked with Wayne.

My sincerest sympathy to Wayne’s family. Wayne was a wonderful math teacher. I loved math and his teaching even made it better. With his help I was the winner of the 1968-69 Junior Mathematics Contest. As part of the “win”, he and I got to go to the University of Waterloo, where we got to see “the computer” which was the size of a room. What an amazing experience. Three days ago, I was going through memories I had packed away, and 2 items I kept out to look at further (again – I do this every couple of years) were the two mathematics books I won, signed by Wayne. They are special to me. So I have always had fond memories of Wayne and the important role he played in my education. It was just 2 days after I had gone through my “memory boxes” and still had the books out, when we noticed his death announcement in the paper. Many positive memories. Dear Shirley, Jeff, Susan, and families. Our condolences to your families. It was a real pleasure to have Wayne as a colleague at DSS. He was there when I began teaching Math in 1974. He gave me good advice and I tried to follow it. I could hear him in his classroom sometimes. He spoke in a very measured, quiet voice. The Students were hanging on every word. He was the same in conversation. A wonderful, kind man.

We were unable to attend the visitation (weather and work) but hope you felt the hugs we would have been giving. We all have great memories of Mr. Bluhm at school, at hockey at many social events :). My sincerest condolences to the entire Bluhm family. Mr. Bluhm was one of a kind teacher that are few and far between these days. Many fond memories of having him as my math teacher and the patience his showed.
Mr Bluhm was a great man, teacher. His obit says it all. He had patience with me and got me through math. I still have my Grade 13 math report card where I barely passed but Mr Bluhm never gave up on me. Sincerest sympathies. Will never forget Mr Bluhm.

To Shirley, Susan and Jeff and family, my deepest condolences on Wayne’s passing – a most wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher and friend. Wayne (“Mr. Bluhm”) was a role model for so many, including me. His calm and steady manner, his compassion and gentle humour served him, and all who knew him, so well. His influence extended into my own career as a teacher – I referenced and acknowledged him often throughout the years. Students would ask me who my favourite teacher was, and while I was fortunate enough to have had a number of important mentors, the first was and is “Mr. Bluhm”.
We are so sorry to hear of Mr. Bluhm’s passing. He was not only my Grade Eight teacher at Dunnville Central in 1961 when I first arrived in Canada but also as a colleague at Dunnville Senior P. S. when he addressed future Grade Niners. He was always soft spoken, knowledgeable and compassionate. We extend our condolences to the Bluhm and Woods family as we recall our family connections and history to Manitoulin Island.

Wayne, aka Mr. Bluhm, growing up I never had him as a teacher, but consider myself more fortunate that he was a neighbour .. one of the neighbourhood “dads”. He had a gentleness and patience and a sincere interest in what what I was doing, how family was, etc whenever we visited. He’d often call me over when out playing as a child, then later when I’d be walking by as an adult. Those memories of sitting out back and the amazing conversations will stay with me and are so valued.
Jeff and Susan you were very blessed to have such amazing parents.
I am sad that I know that there will no longer (at least for awhile) be an opportunity to visit with him like that; but am grateful for the memories, as I know you must have so many treasured ones. May those lessons of life always bring you comfort and strength. He loved you very much and spoke so highly of you all. I am saddened to hear of Wayne “Dutchie” Bluhm’s passing. He was our midget team goaltender in the mid 50s, no masks! At a practice, he took a slap shot in the face resulting in many days in the hospital. We were worried about his survival.
Survive he did with flying colours. My thoughts to the Bluhm family from an old friend.
