It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Ate “Art” Heinrich Schurer, a cherished brother, husband, father, and friend. Art departed from this world peacefully on June 30, 2023, at the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital, in Dunnville, Ontario, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and treasured memories.
The loss of Art leaves a void that can never be filled, but he will be forever remembered by his loved ones. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Cornelia Maartje Schurer (nee Dekoning); his daughter, Michelle Resmini, his son-in-law, Mark, and a host of dear friends and relatives. Born on October 3, 1940, in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, Art, was the son of Bareld and Lubberta Schurer (nee Bresser). He spent his early years in the Netherlands before making his way to Canada, where he settled in Dunnville, Ontario. Art quickly embraced his new home and became an integral part of the community. Art had a warm and friendly nature that endeared him to all who knew him. He possessed a gentle spirit and a genuine interest in others, always ready with a smile and a helping hand. Art had a remarkable ability to make people feel valued and appreciated, forging lasting friendships wherever he went.
Art’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted and loving husband to his darling wife, Corry, with whom he shared an incredible 59 years of marriage. Together, they created a warm and nurturing home, filled with love, laughter, and countless treasured moments. As a father, Art was a constant source of love, guidance, and support. He poured his heart and soul into raising his beautiful daughter Michelle.
Professionally, Art was a highly skilled machinist. For over 45 years, he owned and operated Schurer Custom Machining in Dunnville, earning a reputation for excellence and precision craftsmanship. Art was not only a dedicated professional and loving family man but also a passionate sports enthusiast. He actively played soccer for the Dunnville United Soccer Club, where he showcased his skills on the field and fostered a strong sense of camaraderie with his teammates and dear friends. His love for the game, unwavering dedication, and team spirit made him a valued member of the club. Art’s presence and contributions to the soccer community in Dunnville will be greatly missed.
Art was also an avid member of the Niagara BMW motorcycle club, where he found a shared passion for the open road. He enjoyed the thrill of riding and exploring new destinations, making lasting memories with his family and fellow riders.
A Celebration of Art’s life will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, Dunnville. This ceremony will be a time to gather, share stories, and pay tribute to a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Art’s memory to the Dunnville Hospital & Healthcare Foundation.
